๐ŸŽญ The Dark Web

๐Ÿง… The Three Layers of the Web

To understand the Dark Web, itโ€™s helpful to first understand that the internet has three distinct layers.

  1. The Surface Web: This is the regular internet you use every day. It includes all websites that are indexed by search engines like Google, such as news sites, e-commerce stores (like Flipkart), and social media.
  2. The Deep Web: This is the largest part of the web. It contains content that is not indexed by search engines and requires a login to access. Examples include your email inbox, online banking portals, and corporate intranets. The Deep Web itself is not malicious.
  3. The Dark Web: This is a small, specific part of the Deep Web that has been intentionally hidden and requires special software to access. It is built for anonymity.

๐Ÿค” What is the Dark Web?

The Dark Web is a network of websites and servers that runs on top of the regular internet but is designed to conceal the IP addresses of its users and the servers hosting the content.

The most common technology used to access the Dark Web is Tor (The Onion Router). Tor works by wrapping a userโ€™s connection in multiple layers of encryption (like an onion ๐Ÿง…) and bouncing it through a random series of volunteer-run servers around the world. This makes it extremely difficult to trace the connection back to the original user.

โš–๏ธ Uses of the Dark Web (Good and Bad)

The anonymity of the Dark Web makes it a tool for both legitimate and illicit purposes.

  • Legitimate Uses:

    • Journalists and Whistleblowers: Can communicate sensitive information without fear of retaliation.
    • Political Dissidents: Allows people in countries with oppressive regimes to access uncensored information and organize freely.
    • Privacy Advocates: Used by individuals seeking maximum privacy from corporate and government surveillance.
  • Illicit Activities:

    • Illegal Marketplaces: Used for selling drugs, stolen data (like credit card details from data breaches), and weapons.
    • Cybercrime Forums: A place to buy and sell malware, hacking tools, and coordinate attacks.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ Is Accessing the Dark Web Illegal?

In most countries, including India, simply accessing the Dark Web or using the Tor browser is not illegal. However, using it to engage in illegal activities (such as buying or selling illicit goods) is, of course, against the law and carries severe legal consequences.
